Several of our fighters from Savannah and Beaufort will be competing at the MMA fights at Parris Island’s All Weather Training Facility on October 18th. We have several amateurs and Justin Granet from our Beaufort SC MMA school will be competing in his Pro MMA debut against Norman Jones at 170lbs. Norman will be a tough competitor I am sure, but Justin has been training hard for his fight and will definitely not disappoint.

From Savannah, we have two fighters competing: Frank Joseph at 205, and Mike Shannon at 185lbs. Mike takes on fellow Savannah fighter Chris “Chaos” Scott from Champions Training Center. We have seen Chris fight a few times in Savannah MMA competitions, and know that he will also be a very tough fighter to beat. Frank Joseph will be fighting Kelly Mierra of North Carolina. We wish both of our fighters the best and will be training very hard for this fight and the upcoming fights on our schedule.

Others fights on the card include Efrain Lopez from Beaufort SC, Larry Landry from Beaufort SC, and Muhsin Corbbrey from Champions Training Center in Savannah.

This should be a great opportunity for you all to get to help our fighters train and for fans to see some great fights close to home (sort of). Tickets are on sale now… Visit us soon for special items and dont forget to order your Savannah MMA shirts to Support the Savannah MMA Team.

Savannah, GA, Aug. 11, 2008 –

Local teenager, Max Barber of Effingham County Georgia, was victorious in a mixed martial arts event held on August 9th, 2008 in Mobile, Alabama. He faced Jeff White (also 16) in the 170 pound weight class in one of very few mixed martial arts events to allow youth mixed martial arts competition. Max won his fight by referee stoppage after a high roundhouse kick to his opponent’s head. Max’s opponent Jeff White was unable to continue and the referee awarded the Technical Knockout (TKO) victory to Max Barber at 1:14 of the Second Round.

Youth MMA is a new and experimental sport for teenagers and even pre-teen martial artists who compete with both striking and grappling techniques taking place in a match in which the objective is to make your opponent give up, or render them unable to continue with a knockout. Although there is a risk to younger fighters, both boxing and kickboxing matches are sanctioned for age 9 and above and grappling events are sanctioned in which 5 year olds and older are able to compete for position and even submission (Making your opponent give up due to pressure on a join or choke) based finishes. Missouri had previously been the only state to allow youth mixed martial arts, but Alabama joined this list on August 9th by allowing several teen matches to take place, including Max Barber’s match.

The youth rules were modified mixed martial arts rules including kickboxing style standing techniques and wrestling and jiu-jitsu grappling while on the ground. There was no striking whatsoever to a downed opponent and all athletes were required to wear protective headgear, gloves, mouth piece, athletic support, and shin padding. All matches were refereed by a professional and licensed official who stopped the matches before any serious injury could take place.

For official youth rules and regulations, visit: http://www.americanamma.org/jrdivisionpack.pdf

August 9th, 4 of our students at Savannah MMA competed in Mobile Alabama in mixed martial arts. One of the reasons we decided to go there was because the fights featured youth mixed martial arts from 10-17 year olds. The trip was quite an adventure and there were several changes made both to our competitors and the schedule of events. Our fighters all competed hard, but we had two wins and two losses.

Results :

Max Barber (16) defeated his opponent early in the second round with a high round kick to the face followed by a barrage of punches. Max then took his opppnent to the canvas and took full mount where the referree stopped the match. His opposing fighter was unconsious at this point and the match was stopped as a TKO.

Travis “Red Beard” Shiflett defeated his opponent John Smelley in the second round via an armlock. He fought hard the entire time and landed some pretty powerful shots but John was a tough opponent and kept pressing the action.

Brian Lafond was caught early with a right hook and after the ensuing flurry and takedown attempt, he ended up going for a double leg takedown. Unfortunately, his opponent got caught on the ropes and was able to end up on top of Brian where he established mount and won via strikes from the mount.

David Grosse came ready to strike but his opponent dropped for a takedown. After grappling for a few moments, David took a top position, but lost it when attempting a guillotine choke. He was caught in a quarter as he attempted to get to his feet and was tapped out due to rear naked choke.

Want to Fight? :

All of the guys did a great job, and we want to compete in the next Mobile show in October. If you would like to compete in MMA, let our school know by contacting us. We would love to have you in class as a training partner and would like to see you compete in mixed martial arts competition as well.

Sunday, August 24th, Eduardo “Veio” De Lima, third degree black belt in Gracie Barra jiu jitsu will be teaching a gi-based BJJ seminar from 11 noon to 2 pm.

Biography

Eduardo De Lima - Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu in Savannah GA

Eduardo “Veio” de Lima is a 3rd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) under Carlos “Carlinhos” Gracie, Jr. and the head of Gracie Barra Tampa. He has won several gold medals in the black belt divisions at the Pan American Championships.

Eduardo began training in BJJ at age nineteen after his friend Renzo Gracie recommended he try a class at the Gracie Barra Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For the first two years, he studied under Jean Jacques Machado, then the head instructor, who awarded his blue and purple belts before leaving for America. From then on Carlos Gracie, Jr. was his instructor and awarded his brown and then black belt (the latter in 1997 after 8 years of training).

As a purple belt, Eduardo was made an instructor for white belts and less experienced blue belts, but by the time he was promoted to brown belt, everyone was attending his class, including black belts. Once he reached the rank of black belt, Eduardo was made the head instructor of Gracie Barra. Roger Gracie, one of the most successful BJJ competitors today, was one of his pupils in the children’s class during his tenure as instructor.

In 2000, with the help of Carlos Gracie, Jr. and American businessman Bob Rosseti, Eduardo came to the United States. He taught BJJ out of a Taekwondo dojang in Dunedin, Florida until he was able to start his own school in Clearwater, where he teaches today. While in America, he has trained award-winning white, blue, purple, brown and black belt competitors. He continues to compete in the Pan American Championships. He is also a member of the Florida Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Well, although it wasn’t a large turnout, Savannah MMA did fairly well at the Casca Grossa Elite Grappling Tournament in Alpharetta GA on July 19th. The results for our students were as follows:

Dennis Dutton: 1st place in Men’s Masters (30-39yr) 3rd place in Men’s Gi White Belt division at the 190-215 lb weight class.

Matthew Collett: 4th Place Men’s Beginner level No-Gi at 190-215 lb weight division.

Demetrice Turner: lost his first match by points in the men’s intermediate No-Gi division from 150-159 lb.

These guys all trained hard and did their best and they will continue to compete at local events when possible. The next grappling event although seemingly far off is NAGA Georgia, where we will hopefully have many more students represent our school and put Savannah’s Submission Grappling in its rightful place at the top of the pack.

Congrats guys.
